Siwatu-Salama Ra, a black mother and environmental justice activist from Detroit, is in prison for standing her ground and showing her licensed, unloaded and concealed firearm while defending her mother and two-year-old during a frightening attack. She now faces a two-year mandatory sentence and may be forced to give birth behind bars—in shackles. Activists across the country are calling for her release while she appeals her case. "She was never considered a victim. Her police report went nowhere," says her lawyer. "We’ve seen this time and time again—black women not to be seen as victims, but end up inside jails, end up inside prisons, end up pregnant, being shackled," says Patrisse Khan-Cullors, who co-founded #BlackLivesMatter. We covered Siwatu's case on Wednesday's show—link in bio.
