Operation Break Bread is a program that connects people in Pittsburgh with people who are incarcerated through video and in person visits – primarily women and trans prisoners
Our first group visit was in July of 2017 which brought together 11 Pittsburghers with 10 women at Cambridge Springs. It was really fun! Since then we have connected over 200 people on the outside with people in prison. When COVID happened in 2020 all in person visits ceased for several years. Now there are wide spread Virtual Visits that allowed us to expand our volunteer base.
In 2023 we started visiting in person again although it is difficult with the new online scheduling system and other restrictions at the prisons. We prioritize visiting the two women’s prisons – SCI Muncy (4 hours from Pittsburgh) and SCI Cambridge Springs (2 hours from Pittsburgh).
In 2024, we bought a van so we can help transport folks to visit their loved ones at SCI CBS and SCI Muncy, so if reliable transportation prevents you from visiting, please sign up for one of our free van trips!

Sign up to start visiting someone in a PA prison
The form below is for people who don’t already know someone in prison or are having trouble using the new technology with your loved one in a PA prison.
Some people have only visited one time and some people visit again and again. It’s important to not make any promises you can not keep no matter how small. It can sometimes take 2 months before you are officially approved on someone’s visiting list.
If you are interested in visiting someone with us or in connection with us, please fill out this form and we will contact you and connect you!
