Shadae Schmidt (aka Dae Dae) was a 32-year old African-American woman who died of a heart attack last Thursday, March 13th, 2014 at CIW prison (east of LA). We suspect her death is
due to medical negligence because she had been asking for medical help for weeks. On February 3, 2014, Shadae had a stroke and within 2 weeks she was returned back to a cell in the solitary confinement unit (SHU) where she was still in active recovery. Upon her return, she was given medication that she repeatedly told medical staff was making her very sick. Her complaints fell on deaf ears and prison staff continued giving her the same medication which we believe led to her death on March 13th.
Shadae’s death is a terrible tragedy and one that happens far too often in California prisons because of severe medical neglect. We are asking for as many people as possible to call in and demand that the federal medical receiver’s office conduct an investigation into Shadae’s death immediately, before the prison tries to cover anything up.

Omg this is terrible my sister Margarita Murguia AKA “little baby or Magy” was found hanged in the cell in the SHU on July 30 2014 also
My heart goes out to Shadae’s family. I am a grad student that use to volunteer with fellow classmates and attend events (domestic violence awareness, Juneteenth, etc.) at VAlley State Prsion for Women when Shadae was housed there. She and i corresponded through the mail and I will always remember her enthusiasm around organizing the events and having us students attend. R.I.P girl!

MY HEART AND PRAYER GO UOT TO YOUR FAMILY.I JUST GOT RELEASED FORM CIW SHU UNIT ON MAY 9TH AND I KNOW FIRST HAND HOW IT IT THERE I GOOGLED DEATHS AT CIW BECAUSE MY BEST FRIEND JAMIE COLLINS KILLED HERSELF RECENTLY SHE WAS HAVING A HARD TIME AT CIW AND WITH FAMILY I MISS HER SO MUCH, THINGS LIKE THIS COULD BE PREVENTED, JAMIE WAS HANGING IN THE SHOWER FOR 45 MIN. WHERE WERE THE COPS!!!! IM STLL OUTRAGED! I DIDNT KNOW SHADAE BUT I REMEMBER SEEING HER AND I KNOW HER DEATH AFFECTED MANY PEOPLE AT CIW EVERYONE WAS CRYING FOR HER. Reading this article simply makes my coping with Shadae’s death that much harder. I pray that something changes within the prison system for this is truly a travesty. We shall reap what we sow. I will always love you Shadae. Rest peacefully, little sister.
She was so close to being released. Now she is released into the arms of Almighty God and her mom who adored her. Rest well …you are safe now. To those of us in the land of the living…..make a difference from the comfort of your chair.
My heart bleeds! She was one of my babies and regardless of the challenges she faced in life, she did NOT deserve to be treated that way to her death. We commit to doing ANYTHING WE CAN to speak out against this madness…before yet ANOTHER one of our angels are destroyed as well. Sleep on, babygirl!
